RUN YOUR PB ON THE GREAT OCEAN ROAD

Who said competitors couldn’t run their personal best times in the Great Ocean Road Marathon?

Just ask Lara’s Brad Fuller who clocked 2hours 44mins for the full marathon distance of 42.195kms in 2011, then covered the extra 3kms into Apollo Bay in 13minutes for an overall time of 2.57.

All participants in the 45km marathon from Lorne to Apollo Bay are given two sets of times: the actual marathon distance and the full 45km.
A highly visible clock is posted at the 42.195km so runners and walkers can see their marathon time for themselves. The two sets of times are also listed in official results.

Brad Fuller, 34, who operates a Barbeques Galore franchise in Ballarat, was running the Great Ocean Road Real Estate Marathon for the sixth time when he posted this. His previous best marathon time was 2.50 in Melbourne in 2010.

“The Great Ocean Road Marathon is my favourite marathon,” Brad said.
“It is quite unique running along the Great Ocean Road. You’re not just running a flat 42kms. Your legs tend to get a bit of a break on the ups and downs and twists and turns. You are using different muscles for different sections.
Sometimes you are running completely alone, with just the sea and the ocean. It’s an incredible experience.”

Participants in the 23km Fagg’s Mitre 10 Half Marathon from Kennett River to Apollo Bay are also provided with two sets of times – the 21.097km of the actual half-marathon and the full distance into Apollo Bay.

MOHAN READY TO SMELL THE TREES

Mohan.....3rd from right

Amiable Singapore stockbroker Mohanadas Kandiah has run 145 marathons. His favourite: The Great Ocean Road Marathon.

“Mohan,” as he is known to his army of marathon friends worldwide, reckons the 45km course from Lorne to Apollo Bay has mystical appeal.

“You start at sea-level and you finish at sea-level,” Mohan said.
“The waves are singing your name. They are mesmerizing, fantastic.

“Trust me, it is so peaceful. You can smell the eucalyptus and there is no traffic.”

The remarkable Mohan, 51, ran 31 marathons in 2011.

On his own admission, there was once a period in his life when he smoked two packs of cigarettes daily and drank a bottle of brandy each night.

“That’s in the past,” he said. “I’m now a marathon man and the Great Ocean Road is my favourite.”

Mohan will be running the Great Ocean Road Real Estate Marathon for the fourth time in 2012.

I would like to pass on the warmest ‘thank you’ to everyone involved with the Great Ocean Road Marathon 2010.I had such a great time before, during and after the event and I’m sure many others would have appreciated the ‘community’ feel of the run and the friendly nature of the officials, volunteers, cheering supporters, fellow runners and, of course, the locals. I am truly grateful for the opportunity to have special access to such a beautiful run.

I am already planning to come back next year and I hope to bring some friends along too.Keep up the great work in producing well organised, safe, fun and memorable experiences for so many runners to enjoy.

Can I just say that I was extremely impressed with the organisation and running of the event, it was fantastic also to see the positive impact it had on Apollo Bay and the great support from the locals was much appreciated. This was my first marathon and I will definitely be back next year.

I would like to say this was a brilliantly run event! The organisation of the buses to the event, the volunteers, the drink stops, not to mention the jelly beans were all done so exceptionally well. And the weather could not have been more perfect! I had a great day and if the body holds up I will definitely be back next year to do it all again.
